Come for the blossoms, stay for the region.

Come for the blossoms, stay for the region. There is so much to experience in Limburg Haspengouw; from history to nature to culinary gems. Discover our favourites here.

The accommodation is quietly located on the outskirts of Kerniel, a borough of Borgloon. From Kerniel, you have easy access to cities such as Hasselt, Genk, Tongeren, Bilzen, and Maastricht. Ideal for a day trip with friends or family.

Nature

  • Landscape walk of Grootloon – A true feast for your senses. See, hear, smell and taste everything you encounter on your journey. This walk also takes you past the well-known see-through church. Tip: start at the Stroopfabriek and combine this walk with a visit to this unique experience centre. Also worth the effort: Landscape walk Mariënlof. With a distance of four kilometres a perfect evening walk. You can just leave from the holiday home, because the route passes in front of the door!
  • The walking maps of all landscape walks in Haspengouw are ready for you in Egelhuisje Kerniel.
  • Cycling routes – Egelhuisje Kerniel is on the route of many fine cycling routes. Our favorites are Cycling through the Haspengouws Terroir, Along Loonse Castles and From Fruit to Syrup.
  • Handy: the cycling map of the cycling route network can be found in the holiday home. The house is 200 meters from the cycle path between junctions 136 and 152.
  • Through the water, through the air – It is possible with 'Cycling through the Trees' in Bosland National Park or 'Cycling through the Water' in Bokrijk. Very Instagrammable

History and culture

  • Fruit Experience Centre Stroopfabriek – This unique experience centre can be found within walking or cycling distance of Egelhuisje Kerniel. Between the preserved old
industrial installations, you will discover the path that a piece of Limburg fruit takes; from budding fruit to tasty syrup.
  • Bokrijk – A classic, but the open-air museum is definitely worth a visit. You will learn more about the origins of our current traditions and customs, admire historic buildings and objects and even dress up in traditional costumes from times long past. Children who prefer to just romp around can go to the largest, free open-air playground in Flanders.
  • On a journey through time through the Middle Ages – GRAAF is not just a museum about the county of Loon, it is a real experience centre with children's trail, audio trail, knightly stories and courtly love poems.

Culinary gems

  • If you say Limburg, you have to say blossoms. Various municipalities in Haspengouw organize blossom activities for young and old: from blossom bars to walking tours and
tastings. You can enjoy all that floral splendour from the end of March to the beginning of May. Tip: check the blossom meter to make sure you don't miss the peak of flowering.
  • Missed the blossoms? Don't panic, because in exchange for all that floral splendour, you get a lot of tasty goodies in return: strawberries, cherries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and of course the famous apples and pears! You can follow the growth of these fruits on the fruit meter
  • Wine estates – After your visit to Haspengouw, you will never want a French Bordeaux or Italian Primitivo again. Toast to life with the fantastic winemakers within walking distance of our holiday home: Clos'd Opleeuw, Cuvelier, Het Heuvels Wijnhuisje and Optimbulles.
